The Zain Jaffer Foundation piloted its partnership with W4W Philippines in March of 2024. Its beneficiary, Barangay Laiban, is a remote community in the province of Rizal.

Barangay Laiban is home to hundreds of families. For many of its indigenous residents, gathering water from riversides and springs has been a cultural practice. They rely on upland springs as a primary water source. During the rainy season, this becomes a challenge as water becomes turbid, making it difficult to access clean and potable water, which often leads to health problems such as diarrhea.

Through this pilot project, the Foundation provided water filters for 245 households, ensuring better health and well-being for the community.

The project was featured by GMA Network, a prominent broadcasting organization in the Philippines, in a documentary titled Women and Water: Pasan ang Tubig (Carrying Water). The documentary highlights the disproportionate effects of water inaccessibility on women.

Barangay Mabuhay, a rural community in Marabut, Samar, relies on a mountain spring for water, which often becomes scarce or contaminated during dry spells and typhoons. In September 2024, with support from the Zain Jaffer Foundation and Waves for Water Philippines, over 1,000 residents gained access to clean water through the distribution of 58 gravity-fed filters for 350 households. Each filter, shared by six families, purifies over a million gallons without electricity and lasts for years. Local leaders were trained to maintain the system, ensuring sustainability. Additionally, handwashing stations were installed at the local elementary school to promote hygiene.

This initiative addresses health risks such as diarrhea and reduces the time spent collecting water, allowing residents more time for education and livelihood. The project emphasizes community ownership and follows the foundation’s strategy of long-term, grassroots solutions, previously piloted in Barangay Laiban, Rizal. Zain Jaffer highlighted the goal of improving health, peace of mind, and self-reliance in communities through sustainable solutions.

The Weight of Water weaves together three deeply moving stories set in Nepal, where communities are grappling with out-of-season flooding and severe droughts intensified by climate change. These natural disasters don’t just disrupt daily life; they hinder economic progress and erode hard-won gains, compounding existing injustices and creating nearly insurmountable obstacles for the region’s people.

This feature-length documentary offers intimate, firsthand perspectives from Nepali communities and climate experts, allowing viewers to experience the impact of these crises through the voices of those directly affected. It’s a story of resilience and urgency—a call to action to bring global attention to the human cost of environmental neglect.

Co-created by Deej Phillips and Neelima Vallangi, the film has received much recognition, including the award for Best documentary in the 2022 Aravali Film Festival. The film’s trailer, which can be viewed below, was also screened at a virtual United National Development Programme (UNDP) event.

The climate crisis continues to wreak havoc disproportionately in the global south, often resulting in devastating losses to livelihoods and even life itself. In a bid to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis, communities are constantly forced to adapt to their changing environments.

Featured in this documentary series, Anjana, Sreejith and Dipika come from vastly different regions of India. But all three have one thing in common: they are making an invaluable impact on the lives of the people they share their communities with and beyond, by communicating and implementing low cost and low tech solutions to adjust to the climate crisis.

Episode 3 : Harvest Mother

In Maharashtra, Anjana dedicates her life to protecting her fellow farmers’ harvests from climateexacerbated events like worsening droughts, with ingenious low-tech adaptation solutions.

Episode 2 : Climate Guardians

In Gujarat, Dipika travels door to door in her slum settlement, teaching others how to be more resilient to the climate crisis, and ways to cope with the increasingly brutal heat of the summer months.

Episode 1 : The Mangrove Family

In Kerala, a family continues their fathers extraordinary mangrove conservation legacy, resulting in greater protection for coastal communities from extreme weather events.

Picturing My Climate Future is a documentary initiative by Seeing for Ourselves (SFO), a nonprofit organization that empowers marginalized communities to share their narratives through photography. Piloted in March 2023 in partnership with Cape Elizabeth High School in Maine, the project invites students to capture images reflecting their perspectives on climate change, using their smartphones to document their local environments. The initiatives seeks foremost to raise awareness about the urgent issues young people face regarding climate change.

After a successful proof-of-concept, SFO plans to expand the initiative into a full-scale program in the spring of 2025. The project aims to engage more students at a national level. Support from The Zain Jaffer Foundation has also been instrumental in developing the below work-in-progress preview version of the documentary, which will serve as a foundation for the final film.

Through Picturing My Climate Future, SFO and The Zain Jaffer Foundation hope to amplify youth voices and promote intergenerational dialogue about climate action.

In the desert lands of Western India, against the backdrop of a rapidly industrialising country and with the reality of the global climate crisis becoming more and more tangible, the charming and charismatic family of Ahmed, Sakina and their five children are forced to give up their traditional way of life as nomadic camel-herders and adapt to a ‘settled’ existence as daily labourers.

In a story that spans over five years, we witness the family’s drastic change in circumstances, from sleeping under the open sky, completely immersed in the natural world, to spending their days loading carts of sand in the pursuit of a few hundred rupees.

The film’s portrayal of the camel-herders’ life and the evolving landscape of Kutch is particularly meaningful for Zain Jaffer, whose family heritage is rooted in this region. His connection to Kutch underscores the Foundation’s commitment to supporting stories that resonate with his own legacy and the broader impact of environmental and social change.

Under The Open Sky is produced by Guerrera Films, a team dedicated to authentic storytelling that captures the complexity of human resilience. Through their lens, the viewer is invited to experience the beauty and challenges of life in Kutch, breathing the same air as a family whose traditions are being eroded by rapid modernization.
